When you think of South Beach, what comes to mind? Maybe you might think of the perfect weather, the white sandy beaches, warm crystal blue waters, sunseekers soaking in the Florida sun, watersports like jet-skiing and surfing or sportfishing. Or maybe you might think of the $$$ million-dollar homes, exotic cars and luxury yachts of the rich and famous. You might conjure up thoughts of the famed Ocean Drive with its beautiful Art Deco buildings and street cafes or the skyline dotted with the ultra-deluxe high-rise condominiums. Or you might think of world-class restaurants and shopping and a vibrant nightlife like no other. You can find all of this and more in the little area at the tip of South Beach, known as South of Fifth or SoFi for short.

The Beach

Miami Beach Marina

South Pointe Park is located at the southern tip of South of Fifth. It actually has four sections, the park, the promenade, the pier and the beach. The entire park with all three areas is 17 acres. The park has lush manicured lawns perfect for picnicking. There are footpaths and small hills that are perfect for walking and jogging. Bikes are allowed but only on the walkway, not on the trails and hilly areas. The park is kid and pet friendly. The park has a wonderful kids’ playground area with jungle gyms, slides, and a water splash area for cooling off from the sun’s heat. The park also has the only leash-free dog park in Miami Beach, so bring your dog. But this is the only area that the dogs are allowed to be off their leashes. In the rest of the park, they must be leashed at all times. The Cutwalk is a walking promenade that is 20 feet wide, given plenty of space for bikers, rollerbladers, joggers and of course, people leisurely walking and enjoying the sites. It is called the Cutwalk because it is located right along Government Cut all the way to the pier. You can see Fisher Island, the Ocean, the Bay, Downtown Miami and sit and watch all of the boats, yachts, ships and cruise ships as they go to and come back from the ocean. At night the whole walkway is lit up with neon lights that are both colorful and turtle safe. One of the most popular restaurants is located on the Cutwalk. Smith and Wollensky, the steakhouse serving prime dry-aged steaks, sits right on the waterfront overlooking the channel. Sitting on the overlook deck, you can see everything. The South Pointe Pier is 450 feet long, jutting out into the Atlantic. Walking up and down the pier, you see many people trying their hand at fishing. Stations are set for them to cut bait and clean fish. There are also lots of places to just sit and watch the boats come and go. You also will see kayaks, jet-skis and surfers from the pier. South Pointe Beach is very popular and beautiful. Sand dunes lead to a stretch of white sandy beach that runs from the tip of South Pointe to 1st Street Beach. It is a lovely stretch of beach with so much to do and see. The signature brightly colored Miami Beach Lifeguard Towers with professional lifeguards watching the activities in and out of the water. The turquoise blue water and the occasional cruise ship heading out. Rent a lounge chair or umbrella, get a snack at the snack bar, have a picnic at tables provided, play some beach volleyball on the many courts throughout the beach. Parasail, jet-ski, or grab a board and catch the waves on the beach break just before the pier. One more place to mention is the South Pointe Obstinate Lighthouse. It is a very modern interpretation of a traditional lighthouse. Instead of welcoming ships to the harbor, it welcomes tourists both day and night.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park

There is another park in the neighborhood, The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park. Compared to South Pointe Park, it is tiny. It is only 1 city block long. Located on Ocean Drive between 2nd and 3rd Street and directly on the boardwalk, this park has direct beach access and has showers. This is a very kid-friendly park with the largest gated playground in South Beach. Parents can stop at Starbucks and grab an iced cold mocha frappuccino and relax in shaded areas watching their kids swing, slide and play. But the park is not just for families. Locals come to leisurely stroll through the park stopping at one of the many benches to sit and relax and read a book. Starbucks also has a comfortable patio that overlooks the park. Lolo’s Surf Cantina is also located here and is the perfect place to go after a day at the beach to cool down with an ice-cold margarita.

In SoFi, you have all kinds of food to choose from, inexpensive to ultra-expensive, but all of it is delicious. Whatever cuisine you wish for, you can find it here. Pizza is always a favorite for everyone, and South of Fifth has some amazing choices to choose from. Get a slice from Primo Pizza or try these restaurants for pizza to die for. You can also get whole pies from Call me Gaby, where authentic Italian Chefs create their Pinsa Romana style pizza. Sorbillo Pizza, where one of Italy’s most beloved pizza makers, Gino Sorbillo, makes his classic Neapolitan pizza, but be forewarned he only makes 300 per day on a first-come, first-serve basis. Fratelli La Bufala is the oldest Neapolitan pizzeria in the neighborhood and has a wide selection of pies, all topped with Bufala mozzarella. La Locanda, some of the best pizza in South Beach as voted 9.4/10 by We can’t forget the tasty brick oven from Prime Italian, the high-end sister restaurant of Prime 112.
These restaurants also have full Italian menus, and there are plenty of other fine Italian restaurants to choose from. Forte Dei Marmi, where Chef Fabrizio Piga brings the sophisticated simplicity of Italian fine dining, Carbone, a newcomer to the scene, is an offshoot of the Michelin starred restaurant of the same name in NYC, and Amare where lunch (prix fixe) and dinner are served with love and handmade to order. Even though I have mentioned it up in the pizza section, I have to say something about Prime Italian. It is the sister restaurant of Prime 112. It has the classic Italian menu items with a modern flair like their famous Kobe Meatballs.

There are many choices of seafood restaurants serving up the freshest Florida fish and seafood. For more formal dining, there are Joe’s Stone Crab, eponymous with the delicacy found in the gulf waters off the Florida coasts. It has been serving the delectable treat of the sea for over 100 years. Estiatorio Milo, recognized worldwide as one of the finest Mediterranean seafood restaurants, has brought its food and style, authentic Greek, with the freshest seafood and ingredients, to Miami, where it has quickly won locals’ hearts and tourists alike. Prime Fish, another sister restaurant of the famous Prime 112, serves the freshest seafood from all around the world with a very eclectic menu that is sure to please. A little more casual, The Lobster Shack serves lobster, six different ways, from lobster cocktails to a 1 1/2 pound or 2 1/2 pound Maine Lobster dinner. The Lobster Shack may not use Florida’s finest, but they serve the East Coast’s best.

South of Fifth also has sushi. Two famed Michelin-starred restaurants have settled down in the neighborhood, Kosushi from Sao Paulo, Brazil and Azabu from NYC. Both bring the freshest high-quality sushi and other offerings for their guests. Intimo is a unique take on Japanese. It is a Peruvian-Japanese Nikkei gastronomic experience from the acclaimed Peruvian Chef Juan Chipoco.

Estiatorio Milo may be one of the best Mediterranean restaurants, serving world-class authentic Greek food, but South of Fifth has much more in the way of Mediterranean cuisine. Santorini by Georgios offers plates of the freshest ingredients cooked with love that will whisk you off to Santorini, Greece. In more relaxed atmospheres, Meze Turkish and Kalamata Mediterranean Cuisine offer delicious authentic food from their countries of Turkey and Greece.

Along with fresh seafood, the beach, ultra-luxury condominiums in the sky, and the beautiful people, you think of steakhouses when you think of South of Fifth. Prime 112 is just as famous for its celebrity spotting as it is for its 30 day dry-aged Prime cuts of beef. One of the Top Ten Steakhouses in the country, Red the Steakhouse is the classic steakhouse with everything made from scratch. It features only Prime Angus Beef but with a little bit of modern flair. Another of the big popular steakhouses is Papi Steak. Papi’s has some incredible steaks, but one thing that sets them apart is the homemade food a Jewish bubbe would make, like latkes, Kobe pastrami, chicken schnitzel and their signature Papi steak, a Kosher 32 oz. Ribeye. We mentioned Smith & Willensky when we talked about South Pointe Park, but it is worth mentioning again for its USDA Prime dry-aged cuts of meat, an expansive wine list and exceptional service. You might be lucky to have in your neighborhood one of the famous Brazillian steakhouses where meat is paraded around the room by waiters with knives ready to serve everyone as much succulent grilled skewered meat as they can eat. Even though South of Fifth is such a tiny area, they actually have two Brazillian steakhouses, Fogo de Chao and Texas de Brazil. At both restaurants, the customers are given a card with a green side and a red side. When you want more meat, you just keep the card green, but when you are full or want to take a little break, turn the card to red.

Jeremy Ford, Top Chef season 12 winner, brings Michelin-worthy food to South of Fifth with his Stubborn Seed. With a small, perfectly thought out menu that changes daily, an eight-course tasting menu and a dessert menu good enough that many come just for these sweet treats, Stubborn Seed is a must-try.

Many restaurants are more international. Orilla Bar and Grill is an Argentinian restaurant with a worldly fair that reflects its owner and head chef, Fernando Trocca’s travels and restaurants around the world. Nikki Beach has two restaurants with global cuisine that embodies all of the Nikki Beaches around the world. Nikki Beach Restaurant offers guests of the beach club, morning noon and night, fresh seafood, creative sushi, pizza and more. Pearl Restaurant and Champagne Bar, the restaurant and nightspot on the second floor, is a party every night. They delight diners with Middle Eastern, Latin, Asian and many other international foods. On the other side of things is Lolo’s Surf Cantina, which makes the best Mexican food around. Have an ice-cold beer or margarita while feasting on fresh fish tacos.

There are a few restaurants that can’t be classified, but they have interesting menus. Big Pink is one of them. It has over 200 menu items to satisfy any and everybody. The Local House is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch. Try menu items you can only get in South Florida like the Key Lime French Toast and Florida Gulf Shrimp Cocktails. And don’t forget their signature libations. Finally, one more mention of the widely popular Monty’s Sunset. Monty’s has fresh Peel n Eat Florida Shrimp, Conch Fritters and other seafood options. But they also have burgers, a huge selection of salads, BBQ Chicken and Ribs and much more.

South of Fifth also has options for vegetarians, vegans and those looking for healthy organic food. Lilikoi Organic Living uses locally grown food to support a more sustainable way of living. But that does not mean that they skimp on taste. Grilled Fish w/ Chimichurri Sauce, Coconut Shrimp Curry Bowls and Mushroom Farro Risotto are all healthy for you and delicious. Pura Vida has a simple idea, take the highest quality locally grown organic ingredients and make tasty, healthy food that will satisfy everyone. Both are not vegan because they do have fresh fish, chicken and eggs on their menus. If you are looking for vegan, do not fret. Planta is dedicated to delivering delicious and unique food that embraces the plants’ power to nourish with dishes like Ahi Sushi, where the tuna is substituted with watermelon, Coconut Ceviche, gluten-free pizzas, and so many other plant-based items. Sobe Vegan is a little more casual in its approach. Still, it too uses only the freshest organic food that is prepared so you do not need to choose between eating healthy or tasty food. Theirs is both.

Not a restaurant but worth mentioning is the Portofino Deli Market and the Portofino Wine Bank. Located right off the South Pointe Park, these two are stopping points for many on their way to the park or to the marina. At the deli, gourmet sandwiches made with Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, paninis, wraps and tacos can be picked up or delivered. Or you can come pick up your own meats, cheeses and bread and make your own. At the Wine Bank, they have an excellent selection of wine, other spirits, snacks, and mixers.

South of Fifth has many options when it comes to refreshing your thirsts or imbibing on a libation. Each bar, nightclub and hotspot have their own style and unique features. Minibar, a small gem located at the Urbanica Meridian Hotel, ScapeGoat, a cozy bar located right down the street from the famous Joe’s Stone Crab and South Pointe Tavern, called “The Cheers of Miami Beach” all serve craft cocktails served by professional mixologists. Nikki Beach Miami and Story are two of South Beach’s best nightclubs that have their patrons dancing and partying all night. And South of Fifth even has a dive bar. Ted’s Hideaway has been where locals and tourists alike grab an ice-cold beer and shoot some pool for over 30 years.

South of Fifth is stylish and trendy, but it does not have many choices for fashion. Roses and Dreams is a wonderful boutique located in the neighborhood. Roses and Dreams is the dream of Valerie Melanie Engalls. She began her career at Chanel before settling down in SoFi, bringing Parisian fashion to South Beach with her own personal touch. This shop is a must-see with well-known and up-and-coming designers’ apparel from classy to casual to beach chic. Many other designer boutiques are in close proximity of South of Fifth like Webster Miami, Steve Madden, Zara, and other boutiques and clothing stores. South of Fifth has your fashion no matter your tastes. There is also The Shops at Fifth and Alton. It is 180,000 sq. ft. and three levels. It has all of the giants like BestBuy, Ross, TJ Maxx, Petco, Total Wine and Spirits and a 44,000 sq. ft. Publix Supermarket. While many think it is an eyesore, it is welcomed by others in the area who used to drive long distances to these stores. Now they are a short drive, bike ride, or leisurely walk away.

South of Fifth has it all, no matter your lifestyle. There are things to do and see that will excite families, couples and singles. The Florida sun and turquoise waters draw people from around the world to South Florida, looking for the perfect place to call home. The sunny skies and crystal clear waters may attract them here to South of Fifth, but it is the beauty of the parks, the walkability of the neighborhoods, excellent school systems, world-class restaurants and nightlife and proximity to South Beach and Miami that make them stay. South of Fifth provides everything needed in just five city blocks.
